ACP Color Matching: Approving Samples, Gloss and Panel Direction

The short answer

For aluminum composite panel color matching, approve an identified physical sample of the proposed finish before releasing production. Record the color reference, coating or face layer, gloss, texture and any pattern direction. Agree how the production material will be compared with that reference, and keep the approval record with the order.

A color code is a useful starting point for an inquiry. It leaves other decisions open: what surface the color is applied to, what it looks like on the panel and which sample controls the purchase. This guide helps architects, contractors and OEM buyers close those decisions.

What should you send for a color-match inquiry?

Send the best available reference: an identified physical sample, a specified color-system code or an earlier approved panel reference. Include the intended application, product family, coating or face layer, desired gloss and texture. If replacing existing panels, identify the existing material and installation rather than assuming a color name defines it.

Our colors and finishes range and 2026 catalogue cover solid, metallic and decorative effects. Availability and the final proposed surface need confirmation. A wood-pattern reference, a solid paint color and a metallic finish should be identified separately.

Choose what each sample is supposed to approve

These are purchasing checkpoints, not a claim that every order requires the same sequence. Identify the decision-maker and agreed reference at each stage so a later team member can understand the approval.

Why specify gloss and finish as well as color?

3A Composites' custom color FAQ asks for the finish and gloss level alongside the color reference. It also explains that a color defined for ink on paper may not reproduce the same appearance on metal. This illustrates the limits of relying on a code or name alone; it is not a matching guarantee for ALUCOVERBOND.

Write the accepted sample's identity into the quotation. If the project requires instrumental color or gloss measurement, agree the method, conditions and acceptance criteria with the supplier. Do not insert an arbitrary color-difference tolerance or treat an unagreed number as a product guarantee.

Check panel direction and production batches

ALUCOBOND's installation guidance warns that certain effect finishes can show reflection differences when panel direction changes, and that material from different batches can vary in appearance. Its advice applies to its own products. For your order, ask whether the selected ALUCOVERBOND finish has an orientation requirement and how it will be identified.

Where direction matters, include it in the panel layout and fabrication brief. Ask the supplier how the order quantities, phased deliveries and potential replacement material should be coordinated. Confirm the actual supply plan rather than assuming every sheet or later order belongs to one production batch.

A finish-approval brief you can send

  • Project, application and destination: [details]
  • Panel family and exposed face: [painted aluminum / decorative film / other]
  • Color reference: [system and code, or physical sample identifier]
  • Coating, gloss and texture: [requirements or please advise]
  • Pattern scale or panel direction: [if relevant]
  • Quantity, panel layout and phased deliveries: [details]
  • Approval authority and retained sample: [names or document references]
  • Production comparison method and acceptance criteria: [to agree]

Keep the approved appearance reference separate from the complete material specification. A finish sample does not establish panel thickness, metal skin gauge, core classification or suitability of an installed system. Use the quotation comparison checklist for those other order requirements.

Common questions

Can I approve an ACP finish from a screen image?

Use images for initial discussion. Our product information asks buyers to approve a physical sample for color, texture and gloss before production.

Does the same color code mean the same finished panel?

Not by itself. Identify the actual surface, gloss, texture and accepted sample, along with the rest of the panel construction.

Is this the same as approving signage print color?

No. A panel finish and a printed image are separate approval subjects. For printed signage, also review the production print trial using the intended ink and equipment.

Can a repeat order use the old sample automatically?

Send the original order and retained reference, and ask what needs reconfirmation for the proposed supply. Record the response with the new order.
